The brakes were last dismantled for inspection in 2003 when the rear axle was demouted
and the halfshafts and hubs replaced. At the time the shoes were in reasonable condition
as the lower picture shows.
HP6161 has eight shoes in total; four operated from the handbrake, and four from
the foot brake (two of each on each wheel). They are adjusted by four wingnuts that
fit on the end of the brake rods and move the braking arms backwards and forwards.
By 2013, there was no longer any adjustment available and on dismantling the reason
became apparent. New Ferodo MZ Gold lining material (5mm thick) has been used to
replace the worn linings.
