Changing the lining is a relatively simple affair. Drill out the old rivets and remove
the outgoing lining, clean up the shoe and cut out a suitable piece of new material
to size, taking care to ensure that the weave is correctly oriented. Working from
the centre out, drill through the lining from the rear of the shoe to ensure that
the holes in both match up, and countersink the front of the lining by 2/3rds depth
to accept the hollow copper rivets.
Set the rivets from the back using a roll-form punch and finally dress the shoe’s
sides using abrasive.
